Price check
- US prices from PC Gamer’s gaming laptop deals page, last updated 27 October 2026, at Walmart and Best Buy. Prices change often, so confirm at the store.
- Only one laptop under $1,000: the MSI Cyborg with an RTX 5050 (70 W), $899.99 at Walmart.
- Lowest price per GPU watt among the RTX 5060 laptops: the MSI Crosshair 16 HX at $10.86 per watt (115 W, $1,249).
- Most memory and storage: the Gigabyte Aero X16, 32GB and 1TB, $1,299.99 at Best Buy.
Cheap gaming laptops are harder to find than they were a year ago. PC Gamer says the memory shortage keeps pushing tech prices up and that gaming laptop deals under $1,000 are very hard to find right now. This guide is built on that dated list, so the budget here means roughly $900 to $1,500, not the $500 to $700 range readers still search for. What we add is arithmetic and a decision table, so you can see what each extra dollar buys.
Five budget gaming laptops compared

Product pages: MSI Cyborg 15, MSI Crosshair 16 HX, Lenovo Legion 5i Gen 10, Asus ROG Strix G16 (2025) and the Gigabyte Aero X16 on NVIDIA Marketplace. Configurations and prices on those pages can differ from the PC Gamer listings above.
What the numbers say (our arithmetic)
Price per GPU watt, RTX 5060 laptops only
Four of the five laptops use the same graphics chip, the RTX 5060, but allow it different power. More watts usually lets the chip run faster, as our spec guide explains. Dividing the price by the GPU power gives a rough yardstick:
| Laptop | Price | GPU power | Dollars per GPU watt |
|---|---|---|---|
| MSI Crosshair 16 HX | $1,249 | 115 W | $10.86 |
| Asus ROG Strix G16 | $1,399 | 115 W | $12.17 |
| Lenovo Legion 5i | $1,499 | 100 W | $14.99 |
| Gigabyte Aero X16 | $1,299.99 | 85 W | $15.29 |
How to read it: this is a yardstick, not a performance test. It ignores cooling, memory, storage and screen, which is why the Legion (OLED screen) and the Aero (32GB of RAM) cost more per watt. We left the RTX 5050 Cyborg out of this table because it is a different chip, so its $12.86 per watt is not comparable. If graphics power is your only goal, the Crosshair 16 HX is the cheapest route among these four.
What the step up from the Cyborg costs
The Crosshair 16 HX costs $349.01 more than the Cyborg, 38.8 percent more. For that you get a step from an RTX 5050 to an RTX 5060, 45 W more GPU power, a faster Core i7 and a 1600p screen at 240Hz instead of 1080p at 144Hz. Both have 512GB of storage.
How big are the markdowns?
| Laptop | Listed earlier price | Price now | Gap |
|---|---|---|---|
| MSI Cyborg | $1,299 | $899.99 | $399.01 (30.7%) |
| MSI Crosshair 16 HX | $1,999 | $1,249 | $750 (37.5%) |
| Asus ROG Strix G16 | $1,999 | $1,399 | $600 (30.0%) |
| Lenovo Legion 5i | $2,299.99 | $1,499 | $800.99 (34.8%) |
| Gigabyte Aero X16 | None listed | $1,299.99 | – |
An earlier price is the seller’s reference, not proof that the laptop ever sold at that price. Treat the gap as marketing and compare the current price with the table above.
If you want X, choose Y
| If you want | Choose | Why, from the table |
|---|---|---|
| To stay under $1,000 | MSI Cyborg | The only laptop here under $1,000, with an RTX 5050 at 70 W and 512GB |
| The most GPU power for the money | MSI Crosshair 16 HX | Lowest dollars per watt among RTX 5060 laptops, and a 240Hz screen |
| 32GB of RAM for work and gaming | Gigabyte Aero X16 | The only 32GB model, with 1TB, but the lowest GPU power of the RTX 5060 laptops (85 W) |
| 1TB of storage and the same 115 W GPU power as the Crosshair | Asus ROG Strix G16 | $1,399, which is $150 more than the Crosshair, for 1TB instead of 512GB and a Ryzen 9 CPU |
| An OLED screen | Lenovo Legion 5i | The only OLED panel here, at $1,499 |
Cheaper than $900?
TechRadar’s budget guide (12 August 2026) lists the Lenovo LOQ Essential 15 as best value, starting at $569 in a configuration with an older RTX 2050 GPU. Higher configurations go up to an RTX 4050. It also lists the MSI Cyborg 15 from $649, with graphics up to an RTX 4060. These are older GPU generations and the prices are about two and a half months old, so check current listings. See our Lenovo LOQ guide for how its models differ.
What to check before you buy
- GPU wattage, not just the name. The same RTX 5060 appears at 85 W, 100 W and 115 W in this table.
- RAM and storage. 16GB is the baseline in four of the five laptops. 512GB fills quickly with large games.
- Screen. Resolution, refresh rate and panel type differ more across these laptops than the GPU names suggest.
- Return policy. Check it before you buy, since we have not tested any of these.
Where the sources disagree
- TechRadar’s prices (12 August) and PC Gamer’s (27 October) cover different configurations and dates, and TechRadar’s page shows a dollar sign without naming the currency. Do not compare them line by line.
- PC Gamer is our only source for the five laptops above, so the table reflects one publication’s deal list. We will add a second source when we can verify one.

Wait for Black Friday?
Black Friday is 27 November. Several prices above are already marked down, and memory costs are the reason many deals are thin. Read our Black Friday guide for how to check a deal, and why PC parts cost so much and whether to build, buy or wait for the bigger picture. Our editorial view: if one of these laptops meets your needs at today’s price, waiting is a gamble, not a savings plan.
