The short answer

The 13-inch MacBook Air M5 is the all-round Mac: fast, silent, light, with a bright wide-gamut screen, a backlit keyboard and about 15 hours of battery in a web test. It costs $1,299 for 16GB and 512GB, $200 more than it did at launch in March, and $600 more than the MacBook Neo. It scores 87, a rating of the laptop itself and not its price; at $1,299 we read the value as fair.

Speed and heat

Third-party Geekbench 6 results put the M5 Air at about 17,000 multi-core and about 4,150 single-core. The multi-core figure is about 14% to 16% above the M4 Air, so owners of the last generation have little reason to switch. The Air has no fan, so under a long load it slows down to keep its temperature in check instead of getting loud. It is fast for browsing, documents, photo editing and light video work, and slow in demanding games: one review of the 15-inch model with the same chip measured 27 fps in a Cyberpunk 2077 test.

Screen, keyboard and battery

  • Screen: sharp and colour-rich, about 459 nits measured against 500 rated, with no HDR and a 60Hz refresh rate; the notch holds a 12 MP camera.
  • Keyboard and trackpad: reviewers rate them among the best on a thin laptop; the keys are backlit, which the Neo lacks.
  • Battery: about 15 hours in a web test, against 13 hours 28 minutes for the Neo; Apple’s own rating is 18 hours, a different test.
  • Ports and charging: two Thunderbolt 4 ports and MagSafe 3 keep one port free while charging.
