Why 16GB and 512GB is the floor
Maker and retailer buying guides for 2026 converge on 16GB of memory as the practical standard for students, and recommend 512GB of storage so the laptop stays usable for four years or more. The reason is price as much as speed: memory is the part that costs more every month, and on most thin laptops it cannot be upgraded later. Our guide to why PC parts cost so much explains the pressure behind that.
The MacBook Neo shows the trade-off: its 8GB is fixed, which is one reason it scores lower than the Air even though it costs $600 less. Our MacBook Neo vs MacBook Air comparison sets out what that gap buys.
