The short answer

Quick answer

  • Intel’s Nova Lake, AMD’s Zen 6 desktop chips and Nvidia’s RTX 50 Super are all rumored to appear around CES 2027 in early January. None has an announced price.
  • Only Intel has said anything official about timing: Nova Lake “at the end of 2026”. Vendors told Tom’s Hardware at Computex to expect Q1 2027 instead.
  • Waiting makes sense for a CPU or GPU upgrade you can delay. It does not make sense if your current PC is failing, because dates, stock and prices are all uncertain.

CES is the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, held in early January. Chipmakers often use it for announcements, but an announcement is not the same as stock on shelves, and neither tells you the price.

What is confirmed and what is rumored

Status as of 27 October 2026

  • Confirmed Intel’s CEO said in January that Nova Lake is coming at the end of 2026 (reported by Tom’s Hardware).
  • Confirmed Intel’s next desktop socket, LGA 1954, has been seen on Z990 motherboards at Computex 2026. It is the same size as LGA 1851, so existing coolers fit (Tom’s Hardware, from hands-on time at the show).
  • Rumor Nova Lake launches publicly at CES 2027, with a 28-core flagship first and a 52-core model later in 2027. Tom’s Hardware says this comes from vendor conversations and is not confirmed by Intel.
  • Confirmed AMD has not said when its Zen 6 desktop chips (codename Olympic Ridge) launch. It confirmed a production ramp for its Zen 6 server chip, EPYC Venice, in May.
  • Rumor Zen 6 desktop arrives in 2027. Tom’s Hardware calls 2027 “very likely”, and earlier reports from Benchlife said no Zen 6 desktop chips in 2026.
  • Rumor RTX 50 Super is announced at CES 2027 with the RTX 5060 Super 12GB, RTX 5070 Super 18GB, RTX 5070 Ti Super 24GB and RTX 5080 Super 24GB, using 3GB GDDR7 chips (Benchlife, via Notebookcheck and TweakTown). Nvidia has not announced the series, and earlier rumors gave other dates.

Why launch day may not mean lower prices

Memory is the constraint. Microsoft expects memory and storage costs to double again by fall 2027 (see our console price guide), and PC Gamer found Nvidia cards 39% to 48% above MSRP in August for the RTX 5070, RTX 5070 Ti and RTX 5080. New parts arriving into that market are unlikely to start cheap.

Both chipmakers are also serving budget buyers with older platforms. At Computex AMD relaunched the Ryzen 7 5800X3D and revealed the Ryzen 7 7700X3D, and Intel is rumored to refresh LGA 1700 chips in the first half of 2027 under the name Raptor Lake Next.

How to decide

  • Buy now if your PC or laptop is failing or too slow to use, or you found a part at a price you accept after checking dated prices. Black Friday (27 November) comes before CES, and rumors are a weak basis for a purchase.
  • Wait if you can keep your current system through spring 2027, you want Nova Lake or Zen 6 specifically, or you want the extra VRAM the rumored Super cards would bring (50% more on each model).
  • Check the socket first. Nova Lake needs a new motherboard (LGA 1954 with Z990 boards). AMD has not confirmed Zen 6 desktop socket details. Our take Buying a build around your current socket is safest when you need the PC now; a socket change only pays off if you can wait for the new chips.

What to watch before January

  • Intel’s fall Tech Tour, where Tom’s Hardware expects an architecture deep dive on Nova Lake (Intel has not confirmed the event).
  • Any AMD detail on Olympic Ridge, which Tom’s Hardware expects to follow more Zen 6 news around its server chips.
  • Black Friday GPU and CPU prices on 27 November.
