Research-based comparison. Specs and benchmarks are sourced, not tested by us.

Quick answer

  • All three laptop GPUs carry 8GB of GDDR7 on a 128-bit bus. The difference is cores (2,560, 3,328 and 4,608) and the power the laptop allows each one.
  • At the same 115W, one set of 3DMark results put the RTX 5050 about 18% below the RTX 5060.
  • Power ranges overlap. An RTX 5070 limited to 95W and an RTX 5060 at 115W can end up close, so check the wattage before you pay for the bigger number.

On a desktop, an RTX 5060 is an RTX 5060. In a laptop, the name only starts the story. The same GPU can run at very different power limits depending on the chassis, and the cooling decides how long it holds them. This comparison lays out what is published about the three GPUs that most mid-range gaming laptops use, and flags where the sources disagree. We did not test any laptops.

Where sources disagree: the RTX 5050’s power

TweakTown’s launch coverage lists the RTX 5050 Laptop with a 115W TDP. A Notebookcheck headline for the GPU’s unveiling says 100 watts maximum. We cannot resolve that from the pages we read. The practical point is the same: look up the actual power limit for the laptop you are considering, and do not assume the GPU’s top figure.

What benchmarks say

  • RTX 5050 vs RTX 5060, same power. TweakTown relayed early synthetic results, with all three GPUs at 115W: in 3DMark Fire Strike Extreme and Port Royal, the RTX 5050 scored about 18% lower than the RTX 5060. These are synthetic tests from a single outlet, not game results.
  • RTX 5060 vs RTX 5070. The retailer Evetech says the RTX 5070 Laptop is roughly 25% to 30% ahead of the RTX 5060 Laptop at the top power setting of each (140W against 115W), and only about 10% to 15% ahead when a 95W RTX 5070 is compared with a 115W RTX 5060. These are the retailer’s own averages from review aggregations, so treat them as a rough guide.

The pattern is consistent with the core counts: more cores help, but a power limit that is much lower takes the advantage back. The same retailer advises that a high-power RTX 5060 will often beat a low-power RTX 5070 in games.

Why 8GB matters for all three

On desktops, the RTX 5070 has 12GB. In laptops, the RTX 5070 has the same 8GB as the other two. Spending more on a bigger name does not buy more memory, and 8GB can be a limit in newer games with large textures. If you want to understand when that bites, read how to read gaming laptop specs.

Which one should you choose?

If you…ChooseWhy
Want the lowest price and play lighter or older gamesRTX 5050It is the entry tier. Expect a lower frame rate than an RTX 5060 at the same power.
Want the best balance of price and speedRTX 5060, at 100W or moreA wide power range exists, so look for a laptop at or near the top of it.
Want the most speedRTX 5070, at 115W or moreThe advantage over the RTX 5060 shows up when the wattage is high enough.
Are comparing an RTX 5070 at low power with an RTX 5060 at high powerLook for a review of that exact laptopThe gap can be 10% to 15%, so cooling and noise may matter more than the name.

Three things to check on the spec sheet

  • The wattage (TGP). It is often hidden in the specs or in a reviewer’s notes. If a product page omits it, that is a signal to look elsewhere. See our spec guide.
  • Cooling. A thin chassis may not hold the GPU’s power for long.
  • The display. A lower-resolution panel asks less of the GPU, so check which resolution the laptop’s reviews were run at.
