Short answer

The Sift is Minecraft’s fourth dimension, joining the Overworld, the Nether and the End. Mojang revealed it at Minecraft Live on 26 September 2026 and calls it the first new dimension in over 14 years. Today you can only play it in Minecraft Dungeons II, released on 29 September 2026. It is confirmed for Minecraft Java and Bedrock in 2027, with no date yet. The update arriving before that in the main game is the Ice Caves game drop, which also has no release date.

What the Sift is

Mojang’s own recap describes the Sift as beautiful, vibrant and full of souls. In Dungeons II it lives inside the game’s new interconnected world: rifts appear across the map, and stepping into one takes you to the Sift. Two areas have been named so far, the Meadow and the Carapace.

Reports based on Mojang’s Xbox Wire post add a few mechanics: shifting tides that can affect the player and nearby mobs, hazardous blocks that change how you move, new friendly and hostile mobs, and a distinct color palette. Mojang also showed a glimpse of the dimension, and one of its mobs, running in Minecraft itself during the broadcast.

What Mojang has not said is how players will reach the Sift in the main game, or how closely it will match the Dungeons II version. Treat Dungeons II as a first look rather than the final design (editorial opinion).

What Xbox’s boss said

Asha Sharma, who leads Xbox, marked the reveal on X the same day. Her post, embedded below, is an announcement rather than a detailed reaction: it lists the new dimension among the Minecraft Live news and then turns to the game’s audience. She cites her own figures of more than 300,000 first-time players on an average day and over 425 million copies sold, which we have not independently checked.

The next update: Ice Caves

The current Minecraft game drop is Wilderness Bound, released on 15 September 2026 (Java 26.3, Bedrock 26.50, per Cybrancee and Shockbyte). The next one, shown at Minecraft Live, is built around Ice Caves, and Cybrancee reports it as the fourth and last drop of 2026.

  • A new cave biome, in the same family as dripstone, lush and sulfur caves, filled with ice and calcite.
  • Icicles that grow from the ceiling and ice crystals on the ground that give off a soft light.
  • A frozen zombie variant with no name yet. Its hits apply a freezing effect, and some throw ice balls.

Mojang has not given a date or a name for the drop. Some outlets estimate mid-December 2026 (Beebom), but that is a guess based on last year’s schedule, not an announcement.

What you can do now

  • Want to see the Sift early? Play Minecraft Dungeons II, which is a separate game from Minecraft Java and Bedrock.
  • Playing Java or Bedrock? There is nothing to install for the Sift yet. Watch Mojang’s official news for a date and for Ice Caves test builds.
