The short answer
Price check: US list prices, 27 October 2026 (USD)
- Steam Machine: $1,049 (512GB) or $1,349 (2TB). A Steam Controller bundle adds $79.
- For comparison: PS5 Pro $899.99, Xbox Series X $799.99, PS5 $649.99, Steam Deck OLED from $789.
- Valve says it sells the Steam Machine at about the cost of its components, with no hardware subsidy.
- You cannot just order one. It is sold by reservation, and Valve expects everyone already in the queue to get a chance to buy by the end of 2026.
The Steam Machine is Valve’s small SteamOS PC for the living room. It launched on 30 June 2026 at a price well above what most analysts expected, so the real question is who should pay it. This guide compares it with consoles and a PC build, using list prices from our console price guide.
What you get
- CPU: semi-custom AMD Zen 4, six cores and twelve threads, up to 4.8GHz.
- Graphics: semi-custom AMD RDNA 3 with 28 compute units and 8GB of GDDR6 VRAM.
- Memory and storage: 16GB DDR5, with 512GB or 2TB of storage.
- Software: SteamOS. Valve says that since SteamOS 3.8 you can also install it on your own PC parts.
- No subscription: CGMagazine notes the device carries no yearly subscription.
Launch reviews were mixed, according to PCGamesN, with criticism aimed at the price and at 4K graphics performance. We have not tested the machine ourselves.
How reservations work
- Valve ran a one-time randomized queue. Sign-ups closed on 25 June, and accounts needed to be in good standing with a Steam purchase made before 27 April 2026, one reservation per account.
- When your turn comes you get an email with 72 hours to complete the purchase, or the spot passes to the next person.
- Each product and region has its own queue, so speeds differ. Valve says people on waitlists are only served after the reservation queue for that product and region is done.
- Valve expects everyone in the reservation queue to be offered a purchase by the end of 2026. Digital Citizen’s summary says new sign-ups may not be invited until 2027, though Valve has not given a date for waitlisted buyers.

Steam Machine vs the alternatives
| Option | List price (US, USD) | What it is | The catch |
|---|---|---|---|
| Steam Machine 512GB | $1,049 | SteamOS PC with a Zen 4 six-core CPU, RDNA 3 GPU (8GB) and 16GB RAM | Reservation only, and launch reviews criticized price and 4K performance |
| PS5 Pro | $899.99 | PlayStation console | No PC library or PC games |
| Xbox Series X | $799.99 | Xbox console | No PC library or PC games |
| PS5 (disc) | $649.99 | PlayStation console | Weaker than the Pro |
| Steam Deck OLED 512GB | $789 | Handheld Steam PC | Handheld screen and size |
| Build your own PC | Varies | For scale, one GPU alone: RX 9060 XT 16GB at $469.99 or RX 9070 GRE at $499.99 (PC Gamer, 18 Aug) | You still need CPU, board, RAM, SSD, case, power supply and Windows or SteamOS |
We have not priced a full build here because we did not verify current prices for every part. For the parts that drive the cost, see our GPU value guide and RAM guide, and for the wider decision Build, Buy a Laptop or Wait?
Who it suits, and who should skip it
- Our take It suits people with a large Steam library who want a PC on the TV, can wait for a reservation, and value a finished box over assembling parts.
- Our take Skip it if you are comfortable building a PC. Valve says the price reflects component costs rather than a markup, which makes a bought-by-parts machine hard to beat on price if parts are available.
- Check your games first. Valve’s Verified program now covers the Steam Machine. Windows-only anti-cheat is the usual risk: Activision’s Modern Warfare 4 requirements list Windows 10 or 11 with TPM 2.0 and Secure Boot, and we found no statement that it supports SteamOS (see our MW4 PC guide).
- Steam Frame: in the latest reports we found, from September, Valve had not announced a price or date for its VR headset.
